چکیده
AN Approximately 2.7 million (range, 2.2-3.2 million) Americans are estimated to be chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). This is the most-cited estimate based upon data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The majority of persons with chronic HCV were born between 1945 and 1965 (ie, baby boomers), and the peak incidence was in the 1970s and 1980s. A recent editorial by Dr Robert Gish and colleagues suggested that the prevalence of chronic HCV is vastly underestimated in the United States, as the NHANES data do not include institutionalized people, homeless people, and people living on Native American reservations who have chronic HCV infection. Thus, the authors suggest that the actual number of people with chronic HCV infection may be as high as 5 to 7 million. I believe that the true prevalence of HCV in the United States is likely closer to the higher estimate.
